In 2006, the NCGMP began using the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to provide independent reviews of aspects of the program.
The following is the charge to AAAS:
- Assess integration of geologic information to facilitate analysis and decision-making as set forth in the Office of Management and Budget, Program Assessment Rating Tool.
- Recommend policy changes (if necessary) to support and promote improved science and evaluation within the program.
- Evaluate the role the Program should take in producing derivative products to meet the needs of society.
